Erosion -

Be careful when washing the chimney wall with strong acids, as they can weaken mortar and make the wall more porous and susceptible to further water damage. Even more damaging to chimneys is sandblasting the walls to make them look better which increases cracks and gaps and weakens the ability of the masonry to keep out water. |
