Famous Fireplaces and Fireplaces of the Famed
One of the most enjoyable winter pastimes in the upper Midwest is warming in an inglenook by a beautiful fireplace. The possibilities for fireplace design are endless. If you are a fan of great architecture or if you are planning to build your own home, you may enjoy learning about one of history’s most famous hearths as well as notable fireplaces in movies and some that belong to famous people.
The Titanic
Photos or replicas of the fireplace in the smoke room of the infamous Titanic have been included in many articles and films as well as being a frequent architectural topic due to the functionality and beauty of the ornate hearth. Said to be the only fully functional coal-burning hearth on the Titanic, the fireplace was made with gorgeous Italian marble with Mother of Pearl inlay.
The smoke room was used to accommodate second class gentlemen, who would relax or play poker after dinner. It must have been a very welcoming room as it is said that, even as the Titanic sank, men continued playing cards there.
But that particular fireplace wasn’t the only memorable one. The first-class suites included opulent fireplace design, as displayed in the movie starring Leonardo DeCaprio and Kate Winslet, when he painted her wearing only the Heart of the Ocean diamond.
Hearths featured in Movies
There are many favorite movies which include hearths that fans find instantly recognizable.
What about the fireplace in Home Alone, which Macaulay Culkin beautifully decorated, along with the Christmas tree? With the family stockings all hung in a row, the scene is the epitome of Christmas Americana.
The amazing Elrod House seen in the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds are Forever looks too outrageously incredible to be a real house, but it is the real thing. Located in Palm Springs, California, the house was a celebrity hangout of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, such as Bob Hope, William Holden, and Steve McQueen. The famed near-open fireplace has a distinctive circular sunburst concrete canopy, which creates a stunning visual effect, appearing to float above the central living space.
Fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy appreciate the stone fireplaces on display in numerous Hobbit homes, though those which stand out the most belong to Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. Many have used the inspiration of the hobbits for stone fireplace mantels in their own rustic cottages and homes.
Fireplaces of the Stars
It’s always fun to look at celebrity houses, and many of them have amazing fireplace designs which can be emulated by skilled architects and builders.
Anjelica Huston’s home in Venice, California, features a gorgeous and unique geometric fireplace which can be affordably duplicated by a builder with the most basic of framing and drywall skills.
In Cher’s Malibu living area, there is a gorgeous stone chimneypiece with an Old World look that could be replicated using affordable materials such as glass fiber reinforced concrete or cast stone.
Linda Ronstadt’s living room fireplace in her Tucson, Arizona, home is a real standout with red tiles
